Crimping Patch Cable

Background

Patch / Network cables are used to connect devices to a local area network. You can buy them at most computer stores prefabricated to a specific length. These cables can be expensive, and don’t always fit your exact length. Therefore on-site technicians are often required to make patch or network cables.

Required Tools

All of these are available at many computer stores and home improvement stores.

  • A length of network cable (UTP-Cat5).
  • Two RJ45 cable connectors.
  • A RJ45 crimping tool.
  • A pair of wire cutters.

Instructions

1.Using the wire cutters remove the outside shielding of one end of the network cable. You should remove at least of shielding. You can also safely remove the white Kevlar fibers, but be sure not to harm the four twisted pairs.

2. Untwist and straighten the four pairs into eight individual wires. This is a good time to inspect each of the wires. It is important to make sure the wires are undamaged before moving on.

3. Line-up each of the wires into this specific order.

Orange / White

Green / White

Blue

Blue / White

Green

Brown / White

Brown

4. While holding the individual wires slide them into a RJ45 connector. The wires should be cut short enough as to let the shielding slide into the connector. If there is any exposed wire remove the cable from the connector and snip of  the excess wire using the wire cutters. Make sure all wires are pushed completely into the connector before moving on. Once you apply pressure to the connector it cannot be reused.

5. Once you have assembled the connector use the RJ45 crimping tool to lock the connector onto the cable shielding. The crimper slides directly on top of the connector. Applying firm pressure should lock the down the connector to the shielding and knife the copper down into each wire.

6. Inspect the cable after you’re finished. You can normally tell if the copper knifing made a good connection. Optionally you can buy a cable tester which is normally available where you purchased the RJ45 connectors.
